Better Than Before Book Review

Hello!

As a member of Birchbloggers (a group for Birchbox subscribers who also have a blog) I get to be part of a book giveaway each month!  Between 100 and 200 bloggers that enter are chosen to receive a copy of the month's Birchbox Book Club book!  In March, I was a winner of Gretchen Rubin's new book Better Than Before, which came out on March 17th (we got it before it was released)!

Here it is next to some elastic I bought that came in the mail on the same day and matched perfectly :)

I was really excited to get this book, because I've heard so many great things about other books Gretchen has written (i.e. The Happiness Project).

Better Than Before is a book about habits.  How to start and keep good ones, how to get rid of bad ones, how to decide what activities should be made into habits, and just about how different people are when it comes to habit building!  I loved this book and I learned so much from reading it!

Gretchen analyzes every single aspect of habits: forming, breaking, changing, keeping.  She also talks about the differences between people and helps you figure out which of the four "tendencies" with which you identify.  Most people fall into one of these groups: Upholder, Questioner, Obliger, Rebel.  Throughout the book, Gretchen lists different approaches toward her habit-helping ideas for the different tendencies.

She splits up habit into four pillars: Monitoring ("If we want something to count in our lives, we should figure out a way to count it"), Foundation (sleep, move, eat and drink right, and unclutter), Scheduling ("Habits grow strongest and fastest when they're repeated in predictable ways"), and Accountability ("If we believe that someone's watching, we behave differently").  This section shows you different ways to go about looking at the habits you may not even realize you have and gives you a lot of good options for starting new ones.

The next section is about beginning new habits, and the different circumstances that may be good (or just necessary) to form new good habits.  Moving into a new apartment, for example, may be enough for some people to start and keep new habits, but for others,  something more significant may have to be the trigger (i.e. a doctor telling you that you need to change your diet).

Here is a quote that starts off the next section, on page 133:
"We want good habits - but we also want to make life easier and more pleasant.  Because these aims often clash, this section encompasses many strategies.  The Strategies of Abstaining, Convenience, and Inconvenience examine how we can shape our habits by adjusting the amount of effort involved.  Safeguards, Loophole-Spotting, and Distraction address the challenges of failure and temptation.  Reward, Treats, and Pairing focus on exploiting pleasure to strengthen our good habits.  By guarding against excuses and justifications, and by making our habits as enjoyable we as possible, we help ourselves succeed."

I think this part of the book was my favorite.  She talks about how abstaining from something (like deciding to never eat french fries) can be much easier for some people than deciding to just occasionally eating french fries.  When talking about safeguards, she tells a story about how her daughter decided to stop walking a specific route home from school because she didn't want to buy candy at the store everyday.  When she didn't walk past the candy store, she didn't want candy.  Loopholes are very interesting, and I liked how she broke them up into categories (Tomorrow Loophole, False Choice Loophole, Arranging to Fail Loophole, etc.).  It's funny to read her examples on paper, because sometimes they make so much sense in my head!  Comparing the Reward section to the Treat section was really interesting, too.  Rewarding yourself for "good behavior", or the keeping of a good habit, can actually be a negative and counterintuitive, while giving yourself a treat (that isn't "earned" or based on good behavior, but just because you want it) can be very beneficial.

The final section, Unique, Just Like Everyone Else, focuses on figuring out what makes you you, and using that information to help you with habits in the best way.

"Decide, then don't decide."  That is the main idea of the whole book.  Once you decide on a habit, like brushing your teeth when you wake up every morning, you don't have to decide it anymore.  If you decide to set an alarm and wake up at 6am every week day, then you don't have to decide whether or not you're going to wake up at that time.  Turning activities into habits decreases stress about deciding whether or not you should do something and increases the time you have to spend thinking about other things.  I would recommend this book to anybody who wants to take a closer look at everything having to do with habits!

Love, Lashes, and Lipstick by Mally Roncal

Hi!

I was lucky enough to receive one of Birchbox's January Book Club books through Birchbloggers!  The book is called Love, Lashes, and Lipstick written by makeup and beauty expert Mally Roncal.

It is a really cute book filled with everything from stories about how Mally got into the beauty business, to makeup tips (of course!), to stories about her childhood.  I love it!

There are lots of tips I read in this book that I think about or use daily now!  One example is how Mally says you don't need to rewash your face in the morning if you wash and moisturize well at night.  Washing your face again in the morning can take away all of the moisturization your skin got the night before.  She suggests just wetting your face in the shower or the sink in the morning instead of cleansing it.  I have been doing this some days and I think it's a good tip!  Of course, when I go to exercise classes in the morning, I wash my face afterwards.  But on days when I don't, I've been following her adivice.

Some other tips I think about now when I'm putting on my makeup are 1) applying blush in her swirly "Cinnamon Bun Method" on the apples of your cheeks and moving up and out toward your cheekbones, blending as you go, and 2) pulling your mascara wand either in toward your nose or out toward your ear at the very end, to get different looks!

I love seeing the old pictures and reading stories about Mally's life growing up with her parents, how she met her husband, the first time she sold her makeup on QVC.  It is so cool to read about someone who had a dream to work with makeup from such a young age be so successful in the field!

Another fun thing that she does throughout the book is show illustrated faces with examples of how to wear makeup.  There are faces showing everything from pretty wedding day makeup, good makeup for younger girls, and one that I especially like, which is a series that shows a 2-minute face all the way to a full "Classic Hollywood Face".

There are so many cute pictures from Mally's life and fun stories about all of the different famous people she has met and worked with through the years!  I mentioned in this post that I won a giveaway that Mally Beauty did with Birchbox and I just love the products of hers that I've gotten to try!

This was such a fun book to read, and I know I'll reference it all the time for great makeup tips!

Mally Beauty Giveaway Prizes!

Hi!

A few weeks ago, I participated in a Q&A with Mally Beauty on Birchbox's Facebook page.  Birchbox does these from time to time with different beauty/makeup/skincare/hair experts and they're really fun!  They give you a time frame when you can ask a question about makeup, beauty, and skincare in general and Mally Roncal, in this case, may answer your question!  By participating, you were automatically entered to win one of ten sets of her makeup!  She answered my question, plus I was one of the winners!!

I asked her if she had to choose one makeup item to put on the morning, what would it be?

I was so so excited because I have read and heard so much about her products, but I've never had the chance to try any of them.

Here is what came in my prize!

Adorable makeup bag

Lash Illusion Lash Filler and sharpener

Eye Makeup Remover Pen (which I can't find a link for right now)

I have tried all of these products already and they are so great!  I love that I got such a variety of products to try, and they are all totally different from anything I already have!  I will write about each product specifically in another post.

I am currently reading her book, Love, Lashes, and Lipstick: My Secrets for a Gorgeous, Happy Life, which I received through Birchbloggers (it was the January Birchbox Book Club book), and I love it!  I will write a review on the book when I finish, but she is so cute and has such great stories, advice, and makeup tips!  Since I also received her book as part of this prize, I now have two and I'll be doing a giveaway soon so one of you can win it!

Have you tried any of these products, or any other Mally makeup?  What do you think??

Peanut Butter Cream Pie Recipe

Hi!

Alex's birthday was last week and I chose a recipe out of the Homemade Decadence cookbook (the December Birchbox Book Club book) to make!

Me with the birthday boy!

This time I made the Peanut Butter Cream Pie recipe...oh my goodness.  It's so good, and the recipe is not hard at all!

Here are Joy Wilson's exact recipes, one for the crust and one for the filling:

Graham Cracker Crust

Ingredients:
1 cup graham cracker crumbs
1 tbsp sugar
Pinch of salt
5 tbsp unsalted butter, melted and cooled slightly

Directions:
1) Put a rack in the upper third of the oven and preheat to 350 degrees.
2) In a medium bowl, combine the graham cracker crumbs, sugar, and salt.  Add the butter and stir with a fork until the mixture is thoroughly moistened.  The mixture will not form a dough ball, but will stay a crumby texture.
3) Dump the crumb mixture into a 9-inch pie dish and, using your fingers, evenly press the mixture along the bottom and sides of the dish.
4) Bake until the crust is slightly golden brown, 12 to 15 minutes.  Remove the pie dish from the oven and let cool completely before filling.

Makes one 9-inch pie crust

Since the crust needs to be completely cool before filling, it would be good to make this a while before starting on the filling.  I'll do that next time!  Also, I'd take the cream cheese, used in the filling, out of the fridge a lot earlier so it can warm up a little bit more.

Peanut Butter Cream Pie

Ingredients:
Filling
1 1/2 cups heavy cream
1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, at room temperature
1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
1/4 tsp salt
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
1 cup smooth all-natural peanut butter
Graham Cracker Crust or Chocolate Cookie Crust

Whipped Cream Topping
1 1/2 cups heavy cream
1/4 confectioners' sugar

Optional Garnish
1/2 cup coarsely chopped peanut butter cups (I used this)
1/2 cup coarsely chopped salted pretzels
2 ounces dark chocolate, melted

Directions:
1) For the filling, in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, beat the cream until it holds soft peaks, 4 to 5 minutes (it took a couple more minutes for me).  Transfer to a medium bowl.
2) In the same bowl of the electric mixer (you don't have to rinse it out) fitted with the paddle attachment, beat the cream cheese on  medium speed until smooth and pliable, about 3 minute.  Add brown sugar, salt, and vanilla extract and beat well.  Beat in the peanut butter until smooth.  Remove the bowl from the mixer and gently fold in a quarter of the whipped cream.  Repeat twice with the remaining whipped cream until the mixture is well incorporated but still fluffy (the consistency of mine wasn't right so I ended up mixing it all together in the mixer for a minute or two).  Spoon the filling into the prepared crust.
3) For the whipped cream topping, in the clean bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, beat the cream and confectioners' sugar until it holds soft peaks, 4 to 5 minutes (again, a few minutes longer for me).  Top the pie with the whipped cream mixture.  Cover lightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for ate least 4 hours before serving.
4) Just before serving, generously sprinkle with the chopped peanut butter cups or salted pretzels, or drizzle with melted chocolate.
5) The pie will last, well wrapped in the refrigerator, for up to 4 days.

Makes one 9-inch pie

This turned out so so yummy!!  I've never made a pie like this...or actually, a pie at all, so this was really fun to try!  Alex loved it and he had a great birthday!  We had dinner at one of our fave places, Tavern on the Hill, and then came home for some pie!!

Whish Body Sugar Scrub, Shave Cream, and Body Butter

Hello!

I wrote a post a few weeks ago about the prizes I won from an amazing giveaway from Whish Body and BodyLanguage Sportswear.

Since then I've had the chance to use some of the Whish Body products several times and try different combinations to see what works well (I'm pretty sure I won't find a combination that I don't love!).

One combo that is working really well for me is to exfoliate my legs with the Lavender Sugar Scrub and then shave my legs using the Lavender Shave Cream.

All of the products I won are the lavender scent and they smell SO GOOD.  I have been loving lavender more and more and these are just the perfect smell.  A little bit vanilla-y.  Not overpowering, but just enough to make me want to eat the sugar scrub...

The scrub is super hydrating and when I use it and then rinse it off, my skin feels similar to when I've used coconut oil on my skin in the shower.  The scrub rinses off but it leaves your skin feeling so moisturized!  It's super exfoliating without being rough and you don't need very much (which means this container will last forever!).  It's almost like clay and you can kind of pick up pieces of it to use.  I've used the scrub all over my body and I think it's especially great for right now since the weather is cold and dry!

The shave cream is good on its own, but I like using it even more after my legs are really moisturized from the sugar scrub.  When I use it alone, the shave cream makes my legs feel a little bit squeaky and sometimes it feels like the razor won't stay on my legs!  But when I use it after the scrub, it's perfect!  My legs feel super smooth and don't feel dried out at all like they sometimes do after shaving.

I always put lotion on all over as soon as I get out of the shower.  I usually use unscented lotion, but I've used the Lavender Body Butter after shaving and it's another great yummy-smelling layer!  It's very moisturizing but not heavy or greasy.  It rubs right in and the smell is just like the other products - light and perfect.  I like the pump tops on both the Shave Cream and the Body Butter, too.

I still have several other products of theirs to try so I will be sure to tell you about them when I do!

I first heard about Whish when I got a sample of their Pomegranate Shave Cream in one of my Birchboxes. Later on I also got to sample the Pomegranate Body Butter.

I love that Whish doesn't test their products on animals and they don't use any harsh chemicals - in the products or in the packaging!  All of the products I mentioned are made in the US and contain natural and organic ingredients, which is so great.  If you get a chance to try any Whish products, I'm sure you will love them!

Strawberry Cheesecake Ice Cream Recipe!

Hello!

I wrote a post in December about a recipe I made from Homemade Decadence, which was Birchbox's December Book Club Book!  I won the book through Birchbloggers and I've been wanting to make another recipe!  The other day Alex and I went through the ice cream flavors and picked out one that we wanted to try!

There is a grocery store here called Harris Teeter.  We hadn't heard of it until we moved here and we finally went there for the first time last week.  It's really nice!  It is also in the same shopping center as Target and Michael's, so that's super convenient!  We went there the other day to get all of the ingredients for the recipe and we made the ice cream when we got home!

We used our Cuisinart Frozen Yogurt-Ice Cream and Sorbet Maker to make this recipe.  This is the exact recipe from the book:

Strawberry Cheesecake Ice Cream

Ingredients:
2 1/2 cups cold half-and-half
1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
1 tbsp vodka (optional) (we didn't use it)
1 (8-oz) package cream cheese, at room temperature
1/2 cup sugar
1 pint fresh strawberries, hulled and coarsley chopped
1 cup coarsely crumbled graham crackers (optional) (we used them)

Directions:
1) In a blender, combine the half-and-half, lemon juice, vanilla, vodka, if using, cream cheese, sugar, and salt.  Blend on high until smooth.  Add 1/2 cup of strawberries to the blender.  Blend until smooth.
2) Churn the mixture in an ice cream maker according to the manufacturer's instructions.  During the last minute of churning, add the remaining strawberries and the graham cracker crumbs, if using.  Transfer to a freezer-safe container and freeze for at least 4 hours before serving.
3) Ice cream is best served within 5 days of churning.

Makes about 4 cups

The amount the recipe calls for is just slightly more than the machine could handle, once the toppings at the end were added in.

Once the ice cream had churned for about 25 minutes, I started adding in some of the strawberries and graham cracker crumbs.  Toward the end it looked like it might overflow so I poured everything into a pyrex dish and mixed in the remaining toppings.

I put it in the freezer with a lid on it for four or five hours and then we tried it.  So delish!!  The  strawberry chunks are nice and frozen and the graham cracker crumbs make it sooo yummy!  That first night it wasn't quite as firm as ice cream normally is, but the next night when we had it again, it was perfectly frozen!

This was so fun!!  I can't wait to try another recipe when we finish this flavor!  Or maybe a little while after...since it's just half-and-half and cream cheese haha :)

Alex's birthday is next week!!  I have an idea for a recipe we might make for that out of this book, too!

Winter Skin Savers

Hello!

Like I've mentioned, my skin has been so dry because it's getting colder and colder here!  Here are two products that I've been using that have really helped my skin!

I got the Yu-Be Moisturizing Body Lotion in a giveaway that I won on Instagram.  I love all of the products of theirs that I've tried, and I still have more that I need to try!  This lotion, like their other products I've tried, has a menthol-like smell.  I like the smell, but I know some people may not.  The lotion is yellow, and I love that it comes in a pump bottle!  The lotion is very moisturizing and I don't need very much at all for my skin to feel hydrated.  It rubs in well and my skin feels soft and never greasy at all, even right after using it.  I put it on all over (you can even use it on your face and lips!) after taking a shower.

Another product I've been using for a few months is Gold Bond Rough & Bumpy Skin Daily Therapy Cream.  I saw a commercial for this and I finally found it at Target (the first time I looked there, they didn't have it yet).  I'm on my second container of it.  This product is recommended if you have KP or any skin that is rough or bumpy that needs some intense moisturization.  It is very thick (I usually wash my hands after applying it because I don't love the feeling of it on my hands) and sometimes it feels like it doesn't ever quite rub into my skin all of the way, but I think that's why it works so well.  It also doesn't really matter because I'm wearing long sleeves and pants pretty much all of thet time!  It doesn't have much of a smell, which is nice.

I would definitely recommend both of these products!  I hate the feeling of dry skin, which I'm sure most people do, but both of these products have helped me so much!  Even though the weather is much drier in Tucson, the cold here is making my skin a lot drier than it normally got in the desert!

Dr. Jart Ceramidin Starter Kit Review

Hi!

Last month I won a great giveaway from Birchbox filled with a ton of great Dr. Jart products!!  I haven't tried everything yet, but the products I've tried, I LOVE.  One of the items was the Ceramidin Starter Kit.

It comes with a Liquid bottle and a Cream tube.  They are meant to be used one after the other, but you can also purchase/use them on their own.  I've used both products in the morning and evening (after washing my face) every day since I got them, so for a little over a month.  They are so great for my skin!

First of all, my face, and skin in general, have been very dry because of the cold.  When I got this I was just starting to wonder what I should be using on my face.  Perfect timing!  My face really hasn't been dry at all since using these products together.  Second, some products make my face breakout after using them for a while.  This hasn't happened at all with this kit.  I just use a tiny bit of the Liquid (which is like a serum) and the Cream (which has a texture similar to thicker/less-runny lotion...not the best description!).  Both are yellowish in color and the smell is almost menthol-y, which I really like.

The box lists all of the benefits of the products, such as "transforming rough and dull skin into hydrated healthy glowing skin", strengthening and protecting your "skin barrier from chronic water and moisture loss",  and plumping and sealing fine lines and wrinkles.  I feel like they do all of this and more.

When I got it, I googled "ceramide" and basically, it's the main thing that our skin is made of, making it waterproof and keeping good things in and bad things out (not nearly as scientific as the actual definition :) ).  It really does seem like these products make it so my skin is stronger, smoother, and more solid!

The full-sized Liquid and Cream can be purchased individually on the Birchbox website, along with the kit.  I am definitely going to buy both of these, either in the kit or separately once I run finish these.  I am so glad that I won these products and was able to try them because otherwise, I'm sure I never would have had the chance!

Happy Birthday Brownie Pie Recipe!

Hello!

There were a million reasons to make something yummy today, but then it started snowing!  So the oven heating up the kitchen didn't hurt, either :)

Like I mentioned yesterday, I won the Birchbox Book Club book this month, Homemade Decadence.  It is such an adorable cook book and the pictures make me want to make (and eat!) every single thing in it!  Since I got it in the mail the day after my birthday, I thought it would be fun to make the Happy Birthday Brownie Pie for my first recipe!

We haven't tasted it yet (I just finished making it, plus Alex isn't home from school), but our apartment smells sooo good.

Here is Joy Wilson's recipe, exactly as it is in the book (the parentheses after things are my notes/changes):

Happy Birthday Brownie Pie

Ingredients:
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup Dutch-processed cocoa powder
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted and cooled
2 large eggs
3 tsp pure vanilla extract (2 are for the pie, 1 is for whipped cream)
1/2 cup milk chocolate chips (we had semisweet so that's what I used)
1/2 cup coarsely chopped walnuts (optional) (I used them!)
1 cup heavy cream (this is also for the whipped cream, which I didn't make)
2 tbsp confectioners' sugar (this, too)
1 quart mint chocolate chip ice cream (I got vanilla ice cream)
Rainbow sprinkles
Birthday candles

Directions:
1) Put a rack in the upper third of the oven and preheat the oven to 350 F.  Grease and flour a 9-inch round pie dish.
2) In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
3) In a separate medium bowl, whisk together the sugar, melted butter, eggs, and 2 teaspoons of vanilla.  Add the dry ingredients and fold together with a spoon.  Fold in the chocolate chips and walnuts, if using.  Pour the batter into the prepared pie dish.
4) Bake until the top looks dry and a wooden pick inserted into the center comes out with only a few moist crumbs, 20 to 22 minutes.  Let cool.
(This is where I stopped)
5) Meanwhile, for the whipped cream, in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a whisk attachment, beat the cream with the confectioners' sugar and remaining 1 teaspoon of vanilla until in holds soft peaks, about 4 minutes.  Refrigerate until ready to serve.
6) Scoop the ice cream into the center of the brownie.  Freeze for at least 30 minutes, or until ready to serve. (We'll probably do this part!!)
7) To serve, spread the whipped cream over the brownie ice cream pie, sprinkle generously with rainbow sprinkles, and insert birthday candles.  Light the candles and sing loudly.
8) The brownies can be made up to two days in advance.

Makes one 9-inch pie

We won't get to try this until later tonight, but I'll add an updated section underneath this so I can tell you how yummy it is!!  I am so excited to make more of her recipes, too!  Here is Joy's blog, Joy the Baker.

I'm going to a special, super fun-sounding holiday class at Pop Physique tonight!  It involves tutus, so I'm excited :)

Thanks for reading!

**Update**

We just tried the brownies with vanilla bean ice cream and sprinkles...they're so yummy!!

I cut the pie into eight slices so I would say this recipe makes eight servings :)

I am 27!

Hi!

Today I got something fun in the mail!  The Birchbox Book Club book for December!  It's a cook book called Homemade Decadence by Joy Wilson, author of the blog Joy the Baker.

It's so cute and all the recipes sound sooo good!  I'm so excited to try them and I'll post all of them on here!

Yesterday was my birthday!

Isn't this so cute?  My aunt Chris gave it to me a few birthdays ago!  I love it :)

It was a great day!  Alex had class until the evening and then we went to eat at Thai Landing for a yummy, spicy dinner.

We got Potbelly milkshakes for dessert :)

During the day I got an Etsy order ready for one of my closest friends!  She ordered lots of hair ties and sets for Christmas gifts!  I also got a few other packages ready to send.  I got to FaceTime with my parents which was fun!  I got some great presents and got to talk to/hear from so many friends and family!  Facebook is great :)

Today I mailed a few things at the post office.  I've been addressing lots of Christmas cards!  We had some made at Walgreens and I'm also going to make some, so we're sending out a combo of cards this year!  I've been hanging the ones we get in the mail on this Christmas card holder that I made!

I also made other sayings/words like Family, Fa La La, Joyful, Jingle, etc.  I had them for sale at the craft fair we did last weekend!

I have a few more Christmas crafts I'm planning to do in the next few days, so I'll post about them on here!
